2012 Sydney New Years Eve Opera House

(Embraceable You, 9.15pm, Monday 31 December 2012, Sydney Opera House)

Hello, everyone. Welcome. I hope you're enjoying the evening, amazing setting, amazing weather, amazing harbour, amazing company.

I would like firstly to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of our land, and to pay my respects to their Elders. I also acknowledge the people of 200 nations who live in our city.

Our theme this year Embrace offers a great opportunity to come together to embrace the future, with all its challenges and all its opportunities especially the challenge of climate change and the opportunities we have here in the city to play our role in reducing emissions.

We are one of the most diverse cities on earth, and we can embrace that as one of our great strengths and build on our reputation for openness and acceptance.

Those themes were reflected in the wonderful display we've just seen, and in the Harbour of Light parade now under way.

They were also reflected in the work of Fred Hollows and so it is the Fred Hollows Foundation which is our 2012 Sydney New Year's Eve charity partner.

Tonight, I thank Fortunato Foti for once again creating our stunning firework displays, our creative agency, Imagination who engaged Kylie Minogue as our Creative Ambassador, our performance, lighting and musical team, and our own City of Sydney team, led by Aneurin Coffey who always do such an outstanding job.

And of course, our thanks to all our partners and sponsors who contribute to this now world-famous event especially:
