Sydney will be alive with public art until late October with the 18th Biennale of Sydney now underway and the City of Sydney's Art & About festival due to begin the week after the Biennale wraps up.
The City has contributed $470,000 cash and $50,000 in-kind sponsorship to the 2012 Biennale and in May Council agreed to increase the City's cash sponsorship to $500,000 for the 2014 Biennale.
The City will work with the Biennale to create a legacy artwork from the 2014, 2016 and 2018 Biennales. These would be permanent artworks created by major international artists that would remain in Sydney as part of the City's Public Art collection. The City would work with each Biennale's Artistic Director to identify suitable sites and artists for this work.
$300,000 has been allocated for a piece from each Biennale, and the City will explore opportunities for developing more philanthropic funding for public art.
Art & About begins on Friday 21 September, and will continue for a month. Art & About brings our city to life and I hope you'll take the opportunity to see some of the incredible exhibitions.
The program features Australia's premier outdoor photographic exhibition, Sydney Life, its knee-high companion, Little Sydney Lives, a recreation of the Hotel Australia and a house that rains heavily on the inside.
