Asia on Your Doorstep 2014

(6.30pm, Tuesday 7 October 2014, China Republic Restaurant, World Square)

Thank you, Lee Lin [Chin, MC]. Hello, everyone, and welcome to the launch of Asia on Your Doorstep.

This year, we are launching Asia on Your Doorstep at an exciting new venue, China Republic. It's a restaurant that been receiving excellent reviews for its food—especially its signature Peking Duck—and for its wonderful décor. It is a fitting place to launch this month-long feast of activities celebrating the unique cultural identity of Chinatown and the importance of this precinct to our economy, our community and our cultural identity. Asia on your Doorstep, now in its fourth year, is a key feature of Sydney's hugely popular Good Food Month, an annual event that embraces Sydney's world-class eateries that are so essential to making our city diverse and exciting. It promotes the many distinctive cultural cuisines that have emerged in Chinatown over recent years, in particular the new Thai, Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, Malaysian and Vietnamese eating establishments that complement our more traditional Chinese restaurants. Asia on Your Doorstep is our invitation to visitors to explore and discover one of Sydney's most vibrant and diverse areas. In the last five years, the precinct's population has increased by over 28 per cent (compared to a growth of about 10 per cent for the city as a whole). Eighty per cent of the residents of this area were born in countries where English is not their first language, including 75 per cent from an Asian country. This year's program offers a range of ways to discover the culinary delights of Chinatown, and the emerging areas of Koreatown and Thaitown. There's fabulous food tours, Friday's Little Eat Street, a chance to win a trip for two to Seoul when you dine in Chinatown, and much more. For our participating local businesses, their enthusiastic participation is being supported by broad promotion and advertising, including a dedicated website and a relaunched Chinatown Food Lovers' Guide. So, thank you to the local business community for your support, and I look forward to another great Asia on your Doorstep.
