A car market will operate in Kings Cross car park on a trial basis following Council's unanimous support for the proposal on Monday night.
I recommended the car market trial in a Lord Mayoral Minute as one measure to address the impacts of backpackers selling their vehicles on residential streets.
Residents have met with me several times about their frustrations with these impacts, which include the loss of car spaces used by residents and visitors to local businesses. In these meetings, they have often asked whether a car market could be established in Kings Cross Car Park to provide back packers with an alternative space to sell their vehicles where they are not clogging up our streets.
The car market, to start later this year, will use 40 currently under utilised spaces in the car park and operate 24 hours a day from Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 5pm Friday to Sunday.
The car market is only part of the solution. Early this month, I introduced my Private Members Bill to amend the Local Government Act 1993 which enables councils to prohibit roadside vehicle sales and will be debated in State Parliament the week after next.
It is critical you continue to tell the Premier and Minister for Local Government that backpacker vehicles are a problem on local streets and council needs the power to prohibit their sale on problem streets.
Council also unanimously endorsed my Lord Mayoral Minute recommendation requesting the CEO to develop a landscape plan for improvements in Victoria Street, Potts Point, in consultation with the local community. Victoria Street has a long and colourful history and I look forward to these changes improving amenity.
