There are many exciting events planned for Sydney's next 'Art & About' festival which runs from Wednesday 22 September until Sunday 23 October.
The hotly anticipated month-long public art festival is jam packed with innovative and stimulating exhibitions, installations and performances by established and emerging artists all working in unconventional spaces around the City.
As part of the festival residents are invited to provide light hearted, thought provoking or inspiring conclusions to the question "What if …?", such as "What if … the Spanish had settled Australia?" or "What if … we did nothing about climate change".
The 100 most original responses will be transformed into giant banners and displayed on City streets during the festival.
I would also like to encourage you to enter the Sydney Life Photography Exhibition before Monday 4 July. The exhibition, with a prize of $10,000 for the best photograph, is open to both amateur and professional photographers. Twenty-two photographs will be selected and blown up to bed sheet size for display along the walkway of Hyde Park North during the Art & About festival.
Another key aspect of this year's festival is a project that Kaldor Public Art Projects is working on with the City called Acts of Kindness - a community-based work by British artist Michael Landy. The project will explore discreet everyday gestures of kindness which often go unnoticed. Council unanimously endorsed contributing $80,000 towards its development at the last Council meeting.
Organisations and individuals interested in taking part in this year's Art & About should contact Simon Walkom at the City on (02) 9246 7626 or email@example.com. We are looking for projects that involve the unconventional use of public spaces, contribute to the vitality of our villages, involve the community and are highly accessible and free to the public. The closing date for applications is Friday 10 June.
