The City is booming under Independent leadership. Since 2004, the City has approved around $25 billion worth of high quality development and significant urban renewal is underway. Nearly 40 per cent of jobs growth in metropolitan Sydney was in the City — more than 50,000 new jobs and 2,000 new businesses. The City accounts for a quarter of the State's economy.
Sydney is a global city with a modern, diverse economy and great quality of life, urban development and growth sectors. This is no accident. Our planning, financial management, stable governance and innovative strategies have facilitated growth and nurtured new sectors.
While supporting large firms — over 200 of the top 500 Australian corporations have headquarters in the City — we’ve created an environment conducive to small and startup businesses. 44 per cent of businesses in the City have less than five workers and 41 per cent have five to 20 workers.
Fine grain & startups
Some of the strongest jobs growth was in our village areas. Pyrmont/Ultimo grew by 46 per cent (especially digital economy jobs), Surry Hills/Redfern grew by 20 per cent (especially creative jobs), Glebe/Annandale/Camperdown grew by 38 per cent and Haymarket/Chinatown by 23 per cent.
New sectors including small bars (now more than 100), food trucks (20 operating) and car share (over 26,000 members including 6,700 business members). Sydney is Australia’s startup capital – home to more than 64 per cent of Australia’s startups and almost 15 per cent of the IT workforce.
