Celebrate Women

March is Women's History Month, with the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day (IWD) on Tuesday 8 March. Together, these events recognise and celebrate the achievements of women, and highlighting what is needed to achieve equality.

This year's International Women's Day march and celebration on Saturday 12 March calls for Equal Pay: Big Change not Small Change. Despite 100 years of campaigns for equal pay, women earn 17 percent less than men. The march begins from Town Hall at 12pm and ends in First Fleet Park with speeches, musical performances and stalls.

My nomination for NSW Woman of the Year for the Sydney electorate is Pamella Vernon of Surry Hills. Pamella has campaigned for the Alliance for Forgotten Australians to achieve recognition of those who suffered institutional care as children.

The Commonwealth and NSW Governments have both now apologised for these wrongs and are beginning to provide support for those who experienced past abuse.

Pamella is an active member of her local community, advocating for safety and amenity improvements, and representing tenants in her building on the Neighbourhood Advisory Board. She developed a training program for others to learn about being an advocate for change and has worked with female prison inmates and other disadvantaged people.

Pamella will be invited to the state-wide event where a State winner is announced.
