(Lord Mayor's Reception Room)
Good evening, everyone. Welcome to Town Hall. I'd like firstly to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of this land, and I pay my respects to the Elders, both past and present.
I welcome this opportunity to thank you all for your tremendous support of our Chinese New Year celebrations, which are now the largest - and the best! - outside China.
This 15th year of the festival - the Year of the Rabbit - included all the much-anticipated events, from the New Year Markets in Belmore Park to a spectacular Twilight Parade and all the fun of the weekend Dragon Boat races.
With the Korean and Vietnamese communities now enthusiastic participants, and an ever-broader cross-section of Sydney people coming along to watch the events, Chinese New Year has become a true Sydney event, a great celebration of our diverse and cohesive society.
These major events always depend on collaboration with the private sector, and we're lucky to have such involved and generous partners.
On behalf of us all, I welcome Medibank as our new Principal Sponsor.
I thank our major sponsors Volkswagen Group Australia and Union Pay and our new major sponsor, Ettason.
Once again I thank our long-standing sponsor, Sydney Markets Ltd through Paddy's Markets, and alsosponsors Lebara Mobile and CMC Markets.
Thanks also must go to:
- Our media partners 2UE, SBS and TVB
- To our Launch partner, Citigate Central
- Our Supply partners Bannershop for signage, Chameleon Touring Systems for lighting, the Australian Institute of Music for music composition, and TAFE NSW
And of course I thank our Government partners, Events NSW and the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority for their support and help.
We were proud to have the Fred Hollows Foundation as our Charity Partner to support their fantastic work.
Once again, to all of you - many thanks for your support and help to make the Year of the Rabbit the memorable celebration it was. We looking forward to working with you for the next Chinese New year - the Year of the Dragon.
