(12pm, Saturday 30 November 2014, John Street Square)
Thank you, Kylie [Adams-Collier, MC]. Hello, everyone, it's great to be back here for another wonderful Christmas in Pyrmont!
I'd also like to acknowledge the Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich, Deputy Lord Mayor Robyn Kemmis and Cr Linda Scott.
The first Christmas in Pyrmont last year was a terrific success, with over 7,000 people joining in the festivities, and it looks as though this year's will be even bigger.
There are 50 stalls here today including some on the lower level of the square. There's entertainment including a choir from the Ultimo schools, and performer offering jazz, ska, rock 'n roll, and rockabilly, to cater for all tastes.
There are hot rods and vehicles from the Fire Brigade, Police and St John's Ambulance vehicles in Harris Park. Santa is in the Community Centre, along with art and craft activities, and variety entertainment for kids.
There's also a fantastic raffle, with all prizes donated by local businesses, who've been great supporters of this event.
One of the aims of this celebration is to get businesses involved with the local community, and the community in turn to support their local businesses. It's one of the many ways that strong and cohesive local communities are built and for that reason, the City has been pleased to give our support as well.
Vibrant and resilient communities are the foundation blocks of a vibrant and resilient city and I congratulate everyone who has been working to build this fairly recently redeveloped area into a strong and cohesive community.
Mary Mortimer and all the many volunteers are nothing if not forward-thinking: they have been planning this Christmas in Pyrmont since February!
The funds raised all go to local charities chosen by the community - and they're all represented here today. They are Pyrmont Cares, Barnardos, YMCA SwimAbility and Ultimo Public School. Last year's celebration raised $60,000 and the target this year is $100,000, which the volunteers have been raising since June.
So please help them meet the target by buying raffle tickets and participating in this great Christmas in Pyrmont, which I now declare officially open.
Have a great day, everyone.
