Clover's eNews - No 611

Thousands of Sydneysiders lined George Street at lunchtime on Monday to welcome home our team from the London Olympics. I was joined at Town Hall by Her Excellency Governor Marie Bashir and Premier Barry O'Farrell to congratulate our athletes.

I presented the Keys to the City to basketballer Lauren Jackson on behalf of the entire Olympic team. Their hard work and dedication is a great example and they should all be very proud.

The Paralympic Games begin on August 29. The City of Sydney is a major sponsor of Australia's Paralympic team and you can follow their progress on our website. I'm sure their efforts will be inspirational.

It has been a busy week in Parliament and I've been pushing the State Government for action on issues including the rights of people in boarding houses and improving access to Redfern station.

I also asked the Premier to commit to moving NSW into the 21st Century by ending marriage discrimination. The 2011 Census shows New South Wales has the highest number of same-sex couples and polls show that the majority of people in this State support same sex marriage.

Yet we are not leading on reform, with the Tasmanian, South Australian and ACT governments committed to legislation if bills fail in the Federal Parliament. Given the Tasmanian Government has legal advice that a State bill is constitutional, the NSW Government should listen to the people and follow suit.

Sadly, the Premier refused to engage in the topic, merely stating: "the Government has no such intention".

We have just two weeks left until Sydney decides on the future of our city.

I still urgently need your help to fund our campaign for re-election. Even a small contribution can make a big difference. If you can spare $30 to help us print posters and flyers please visit www.clovermoore.com.au/supportteamclover
