I congratulate Alex Greenwich, who was formally declared the new Member for Sydney yesterday morning.
Alex received a primary vote of 47.3 per cent, and after the distribution of preferences his two-candidate preferred vote was 63.7 per cent.
This stunning result was a resounding confirmation that the Sydney Electorate wanted to retain Independent representation in State Parliament and an emphatic rejection of the Liberal/National Government's actions which forced me to resign from Parliament.
The result also reflects Alex's strong community campaign supported by a large team of enthusiastic volunteers, many of whom worked tirelessly in the lead up to and on election day. Alex and his team had to organise their campaign in a month, much less than the time allowed for other recent by-elections.
Alex's immediate priorities include working with inner-city parents and the community to secure a comprehensive high school for the Sydney electorate, protecting public housing tenants and opposing the O'Farrell Government's reprehensible deal with James Packer for a second Sydney casino.
As a leader of the campaign for marriage equality, achieving marriage for same sex couples in NSW is another major objective. Alex is also committed to getting action to help small business prosper in the digital economy.
Alex has already begun working for the Sydney electorate. He is taking over my former office at 58 Oxford Street, Paddington and will continue with the dedicated and hardworking Electorate office staff - Tammie, Roy and Leanne.
