Sydney has a vibrant creative cultural life and I want to see it continue to thrive. Creative industries contribute nearly $15 billion to our economy. Each year the City directly invests more than $30 million supporting Sydney's creative scene.
We support festivals and events in Sydney including New Year's Eve, Art & About, Sydney Festival and Mardi Gras, as well as small and local creative projects like Chippendale's BEAMs festival and the Newtown Festival through our grants and sponsorship program.
I established a Live Music and Performance Taskforce to come up with a plan that would both balance the amenity of local residents and support a revival of live music and performance.
New City of Sydney facilities are encouraging creativity to flourish. The state-of-the art Eternity Playhouse is being operated by Darlinghurst Theatre Company, while Reg Murphy Centre in Potts Point is now home to the Hayes Theatre Co.
On Oxford and William Streets we are hosting a number of start-up, innovative and creative companies in City-owned buildings.
Our Cultural Policy will guide the City of Sydney's work to support this creativity.
Sydney should be a vital city for all ages. I want to promote a distinctively Sydney culture that is as much a part of our city as our amazing harbour.
