Every year around six billion beverage containers in Australia end up in landfill or as litter, creating waste, pollution, greenhouse emissions and harming birds and marine life.
A container deposit scheme would lift container recycling rates to over 80 per cent through a small redeemable fee that provides an incentive to recycle containers consumed away from home and for community groups to collect littered containers during fundraising drives.
Beverage container collection facilities could become recycling hubs that could also collect things like e-waste and batteries. Councils could redeem deposits on containers in the kerbside system and household waste collection costs would drop.
Most Australians want a container deposit scheme yet industry opposition appears to be stalling a national system. South Australia and the Northern Territory are doing it and in Parliament I asked the Government to look at the introduction of a similar scheme in NSW
