There are a growing numbers of young families in our community, and the City is committed to ensuring there are facilities and services to meet their growing needs.
Childcare is an important part of this and the City has set aside $10 million to invest in new facilities across our LGA. We need State Government cooperation to create more places for primary and secondary school children.
A recent State Government proposal to redevelop the current site of Ultimo Public School with a mix of commercial, residential and education was not an adequate solution, and was opposed by many parents and local residents.
The heritage-listed Bidura Children's Court on Glebe Point Road has been identified as a potential site for primary or secondary education facilities.
The property is owned by the NSW State Property Authority, and in December I wrote to the Minister for Planning Brad Hazzard to discuss the potential use of the property for education.
In response to my letter, Minister Hazzard has undertaken to raise the issue with Education Minister Adrian Piccoli and Finance Minister Gregory Pearce.
