Agreement with the Department of Education for potential joint use of facilities in the City of Sydney
We have limited space in the City to create new sports fields, communal halls and indoor recreation facilities, so we’re hoping to negotiate community use of existing Department of Education facilities.
If Council endorses our new framework for negotiation on Monday, I’ll take it to the Education Minister and we’ll begin forming agreements to enable the community to access school facilities outside of school hours, such as nights and weekends. This has the potential to substantially increase the amount of publicly accessible sport facilities in our area, and I look forward to working with the NSW Government to make this happen.
Council has committed more than $400 million towards new and upgraded open space over the next decade, including about $77 million this financial year. Exploring partnership opportunities is a key priority in Council’s recently adopted Open Space, Sports and Recreation Needs Study 2016, which you can read more about here.
