Environment & Sustainability

We need to create a city that is environmentally sustainable in the long term. Climate change is the most urgent challenge we face and we need to act now.

The City of Sydney has a target of reducing our carbon pollution by 70 per cent by 2030. It is an ambitious but achievable target, and we have detailed plans on how to meet it.

To achieve this goal and protect our environment, we are investing in renewable energy, decentralised trigeneration, energy efficiency, and converting waste to energy.

We have installed the largest building-mounted solar power system in Australia. We're replacing all our street and park lighting with energy-efficient LED lights. And we are embracing electric and hybrid vehicles.

Our Greening Sydney plan will transform the City's streets and reducing carbon emission by providing shade and natural filtering of air and stormwater. Nearly 10,000 additional trees have been planted in our streets and parks since 2005.

The City has worked closely with a huge range of industry partners to create a Decentralised Water Master Plan that will ensure our water needs are met sustainably.

We also support great ideas in our community through environmental grants, helpful seminars, and our Green Living Centre in Newtown.
