Food trucks trial extended

The trial of Sydney's popular food trucks will be extended until March 2014.

The food trucks started hitting our streets in May 2012, with our ninth truck, Let's Do Yum Cha, starting trading last month. The truck's construction, fit out, permit approval and site selection process took longer than expected - which is why the trial period is being extended.

An upgrade to the popular food truck app will also make it easier to track and find the trucks as they move around the City, stopping on selected streets and in parks, plazas and other public places around the city.

The app gives real-time information about truck locations, operating times and menus, and draws in the social media feeds of the truckers and their followers.

New and upgraded features include:

• Opt-in 'push' notifications that send users real-time messages from trucks when they start serving at a particular spot

• Easy-to-spot green pins on a map showing trucks that are serving and an orange pin listing their next location

• A schedule tab for each truck, showing their upcoming trading location, date and time of service

• New features to share the truck's status messages, locations, updates, photos and menu items via Twitter, email, SMS and Facebook

• A new Instagram function that shows pictures of the day's fare.

The City's website has been updated with the same features: sydneyfoodtrucks.com.au

Available from the iTunes App Store and Google play, the app can be installed on

iPhones, iPads and Android-powered devices.

Food truck services were among the ideas Sydneysiders proposed when the City asked what people wanted for their city at night. In adding a new layer to Sydney's dining scene, they have become a regular feature at events and festivals.

New research for the City shows the app and website are the most common way people find the food trucks. It also shows the food truck program already has a large and loyal fan base that continues to attract new customers and generate new business in the city.

The app has been downloaded over 42,000 times since its launch last September, and is still being downloaded 6,000 times a month on average.

If you haven't yet tried one of our food trucks - jump on the website or download the app and find your way to them.
