Harris Street Community Centre CNY Celebration

(Quarry Green Ultimo)

Hello, everyone. Kung Hei Fat Choy - Happy Chinese New Year of the Rabbit! I would like firstly to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of this land.

I'd also like to acknowledge the Hon Tanya Plibersek, MP, and to thank all the terrific performers here today. What great entertainment you've lined up.

The Harris Community Centre began this festival back in 1996 and for the last few years, the City of Sydney has been a keen supporter. It has become an important and very popular part of community life in Ultimo-Pyrmont.

One of the great things about it is that it brings together all ages and sections of this City village, reinforcing the bonds between you all.

As one of the organisers said, "everyone has a ripping good time" and it's a great way to learn about Chinese culture which has had a presence in Sydney from our earliest days.

Chinatown is one of our most popular tourist attractions, as well as an important working part of the City, and we are investing a lot of effort this year into improving some of the streets and laneways there.

So I hope you'll continue to visit Chinatown and that you'll enjoy the better environment we're providing.

Finally, I'd like to wish you all a very happy Chinese New Year. People born in this Year of the Rabbit are kind and loving, with grace, culture and beautiful manners - and I hope that's what you encounter throughout this year.

Once again, Kung Hei Fat Choy! And enjoy your day.
