It's Mardi Gras season again, and I proudly march in support of inclusion and acceptance of our GLBT communities. I invite you to join me in support of equal rights and acceptance of all people, irrespective of gender and sexuality.
This year's parade theme is "Infinite Love". The City of Sydney's parade entry will focus on the need to fix the Commonwealth Marriage Act to allow same sex couples to marry.
I strongly support the law reform campaign, and have spoken at numerous rallies and lobbied in support of the community call for equality. In November 2011, my Lord Mayoral Minute resulted in Council unanimously voting to call upon the Australian Parliament to amend the Marriage Act to enable same sex couples to marry and to ensure that same sex marriages solemnised overseas are recognised in Australia. I hope that all political parties and individual Members of Parliament will support these amendments.
Following a meeting with Australian Marriage Equity, I have committed to introducing State legislation on marriage equality, if this is constitutionally sound and federal reform does not occur.
The 2012 Sydney Mardi Gras parade is on Saturday 3 March. Please contact my office if you'd like to join me in the parade.
