On Wednesday I held the first social housing tenants forum for 2013 at the Northcott Community Centre in Surry Hills.
The City of Sydney has over 10,000 social housing properties—more than any other local government area in the country.
As the Member for Sydney, I began holding regular meetings to bring public housing tenants together with representatives of the City, NSW Housing and police to work together to solve problems. The meetings were a great success and I expanded them to cover other areas of the City when I was elected Lord Mayor. I now hold forums during the year for residents of Millers Point, Glebe, Woolloomooloo, Redfern, Waterloo and Surry Hills.
The new Member for Sydney, Alex Greenwich MP, will continue to meet with tenants and discuss the issues affecting them. I know Alex will continue to make sure that tenants have a voice in Parliament.
In December, Council passed a notice of Motion opposing the ongoing sale of public housing in Millers Point, and both Alex and I have written to the Minister for Family and Community Services and the Minister for Finance and Services calling on the NSW Government to stop the sale of public housing in this historic area. We will work with residents to fight the sale of properties in the area.
There are some real success stories coming out of these communities and I encourage Housing NSW tenants to come along to the next meeting in their area to hear about work being done in your community.

In the past all the Redfern Social Housing meetings have been held in the Redfern Centre behind St Saviours Church, Young St Redfern, however the Church won't be available in 2013 because of refurbishment works. Residents will be told of the new venue as soon as we have confirmed.
