Would you like to help the City of Sydney in its seventh bi-annual Street Count of Rough Sleepers?
Council relies on volunteers to collect the data that helps monitor inner city homelessness and track progress in getting people off the streets. The February count identified 840 people needing a home - 477 in hostels beds and 363 sleeping rough.
The 2011 Winter count takes place early on Tuesday morning 2 August starting at 1am and finishing around 3am. Volunteers will need to arrive at Headquarters at midnight on the Monday evening. The City has a training session and volunteer manual so you know what to do, but you need to register beforehand.
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data for 2009/10 shows that homelessness agencies are full and turn away nearly 60 per cent of those seeking help. The local data from these counts is vital to getting Government action on homelessness.
