The Minister confirmed this weekend that the majestic fig tree adjacent to the Langton Clinic on South Dowling Street in Surry Hills will be destroyed to make way for light rail even though it’s removal is completely unnecessary.
City staff have done a lot of work to show how its root system can be protected, which would not affect the light rail route. But the Department of Transport refuses to save the tree and have told us they will remove it as early Monday.
At 8:30am on Monday morning, I will stand with Jeff Angel from the Total Environment Centre in front of the majestic Langton Clinic fig tree to say to the Transport Minister that we will not stand for its removal.
It doesn't have to be this way. The government has options – we should be able to have light rail and keep our magnificent trees.
