(12.30pm 5 November 2011, Newtown)
Hello, everyone, I hope you've been enjoying the entertainment. I'd like firstly to acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, and to pay my respects to the Elders, both past and present.
It's a pleasure to join you to celebrate the completion of our improvements to this park. Our green spaces are such a significant community asset and they deserve our on-going care.
Each year, the City allocates $2.5 million to improve our small parks and playgrounds and this is one of four local playgrounds in the Newtown/Erskineville area that we began work on last year to upgrade - the others being Kirsova No 1 Playground, Flora and Knight Reserve and Rochford Street Playground - and we are opening all of them today!
Quite apart from major spaces like Hyde Park, Prince Alfred Park or Sydney Park, these local community parks play an important role in providing spaces for play and passive recreation, as well as helping build a sense of community.
Here we have taken the opportunity provided by the upgrade to install a storm-water harvesting tank underground.
The basketball courts have been improved and new play equipment introduced. We've planted a new lawn as well as new trees and shrubs and provided new seating and decked areas.
These changes will improve the park for all users, including the school students who will continue to share the facilities under the Plan of Management.
So please stay and enjoy the free barbecue and fruit juice, the Newtown Public School cake stall and the bike decorating courtesy of Sydney Cycle Chic.
There's also a form here which asks you a question about the park which you can complete for a small prize. We hope this will stimulate curiosity about your neighbourhood and appreciation of its open spaces. Have a great day, everyone.
