(12pm 12 February 2012, Victoria Park, Camperdown)
Thank you, Peter, MC. Hello, everyone - welcome to Fair Day! I would like firstly to acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the traditional custodians of our land, and to pay my respects to their Elders. I also acknowledge the 200 nationalities who make up our city - and its gay and lesbian communities - all part of the great diversity that is Sydney.
I also acknowledge the Hon Barry O'Farrell, Premier and Minister for Western Sydney.
The City of Sydney continues to champion the diversity which contributes so much to Sydney's vitality and richness. Each Mardi Gras we send a clear message of our commitment to equality in diversity when we raise the Rainbow Flag over Town Hall.
As I told December's Marriage Equality Rally in Hyde Park, many Australians now refuse to accept or endorse discriminatory laws and practices. And it is time that our law-makers followed suit.
I will continue to press in Parliament for marriage equality and the City will continue to support our GLBT communities - as we support all our communities.
This year's Fair Day sees the first Youth Hub here - a great initiative to support young people. And of course, it's wonderful to welcome Kylie Minogue, back for Mardi Gras.
As always there's was a terrific line-up of canine talent for Doggywood, and a terrific array of activities for Fair Day. I'm pleased to launch Fair Day and I wish you all a fabulous day. Have a great Mardi Gras, everyone!
