New Years Eve Media Call

(10am, Monday 31 December 2012, Dawes Point Reserve)

Hello, everyone, thank you for coming. I'd like firstly to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of our land, and to pay my respects to their Elders. I also acknowledge the people of 200 nations who live in our City.

I hope you've all recovered from Christmas!

The excitement's now building up for the New Year's Eve countdown. There's an exciting combination in the creative input from our 2012 Creative Ambassador, Kylie Minogue, new firework designs, and - we hope - the world's biggest audience participation.

As you know, the City and Telstra have developed a free phone app that will allow the million or so people around the harbour to take part in an interactive light show.

It can be downloaded from your app store, or from www.sydneynewyearseve.com/app.

At four points during the night - 10.15pm, 11pm, 11.30pm and 11.45pm - people will be urged to hold their phones to the sky as their screens illuminate. It will make for a spectacular sight and will involve spectactors in helping create the event. It'll be the first-ever interactive light show on Sydney Harbour.

The sky and the harbour will be lit up with an explosion of magenta, yellow, purple and blue fireworks, created as always by the fabulous Foti family, and inspired by Kylie's theme of Embrace.

Fortunati Foti and Kylie have also worked together on a new firework in the shape of a musical note which will be part of both the 9pm Family Fireworks and the Midnight display.

Both will be set to a special sound-track chosen by Kylie and friends, and people watching the Midnight fireworks can tune their radios to 2DayFM to listen to the synchronised sound.

A billion people around the world will see these celebrations - not just because we're the first major city to hit midnight, but also because we have the world's greatest theatre for public celebration - Sydney Harbour - and with our partners and collaborators, we put on the most stunning show.

A big part of its success is the friendly outdoor spirit, and while we want everyone to party, and to have a fabulous time, please help us in getting the message across: New Year's Eve is best enjoyed by using public transport, respecting other people, and watching out for your mates. We also ask people to be generous in their support of our 2012 Charity Partner, the wonderful Fred Hollows Foundation.

Thank you for coming today, and I wish you all a very happy New Year.

Thank you.
