Residents continue to report impacts from noisy vehicles late at night and I've asked the Minister for the Environment to organise foot patrols by Environmental Protection Authority officers in Macleay Street and Darlinghurst Road to address the issue.
In response to my November Parliamentary Question and December representations, the Minister says that the EPA now has additional staff to deal with these noise issues.
While vehicle noise is a State Government responsibility, five City of Sydney Late Night Ordinance Rangers have been trained and refer noisy vehicles to the EPA for follow up. Kings Cross Police coordinate joint operations and on-the-spot testing was conducted in Cowper Wharf Road last weekend. More than 100 infringements were issued in 2011 - double the 2010 results.
The City's traffic controllers continue to enforce the Cowper Wharf Road closure on weekend nights, with support from Kings Cross Police. I have asked City officers to review traffic measures for the wider precinct to assess reported displacement.
Residents are encouraged to report noisy vehicles to the EPA Hotline (phone 131 555). I encourage affected residents to also ask the Minister for the Environment to provide more EPA foot patrols targeting noisy vehicles.
