Pine Street Students' Arts Exhibition

(6.30pm September 16 2011, Pine Street Creative Arts Centre)

Thank you, Jane Hooper, MC. Good evening, everyone. I would like firstly to acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, and I pay my respects to the Elders, both past and present.

I would also like to thank Millie Ingram for her Welcome to Country to mark the opening of this annual exhibition.

Pine Street is a highly valued, and much-loved, part of the City of Sydney. It offers a fantastic range of quality arts programs, events and exhibitions to the local community.

It puts a premium on creative expression, and on making that opportunity available as widely as possible by equipping people with the basic skills, and giving them the confidence to create art. For many, perhaps, the confidence is as important as the art-making skills themselves.

Pine Street can call on the skills of specialist tutors and professional artists who teach in a friendly and engaging studio environment.

The wonderful work on display tonight is testament to their teaching and encouragement, and to the creative talents of the people who come to the Pine Street courses.

Each year, this exhibition features works produced in the last 12 months. This year, as you can see, they include painting and drawing, printmaking, ceramics and porcelain and silver jewellery.

Not only does this annual exhibition give students the opportunity to display their work in a professional gallery environment, it also allows audiences to gain an insight into the creative journeys they have made.

Hopefully, it will inspire more people to unlock their inner artist!

So very warm thanks to all the Pine Street tutors whose skills inspire so many and make these programs possible.

Thanks also to:

  • the exhibition curators, Rowena Hall and Rebecca Baird;
  • Pine Street's manager, Jane Hooper;
  • the program co-ordinators, Phil Relf, Christie Torrington and Bess O'Malley; and
  • thanks of course to the talented students of Pine Street.

Congratulations to you all on a truly impressive exhibition.

And it's now my great pleasure to declare the annual Pine Street Students' Exhibition officially open. Please stay and enjoy the evening.
