On Thursday the Government and Opposition supported my Private Members Bill to make vehicle sales illegal on problem streets.
There's no doubt an inner city street is not an appropriate place for backpackers to camp while they are waiting to sell their vehicles. This law will give Council the power it needs to take action.
The Bill, making it illegal to sell vehicles on problem streets, will work hand-in-glove with the City's new backpacker car market, soon to be operating out of the Kings Cross Car Park.
The market will give backpackers a viable, safe alternative to sell their vehicle and stop the problem from spreading to neighbouring streets. The market will be free of charge for the first three months.
In addition, the City will present a $1.4 million landscaping plan for Victoria Street to residents at a public meeting this Monday. Plans include planter boxes and additional planting on kerbs.
The landscaping plans, further information on the car market and an update on the passage of my Private Members Bill will be discussed at a public meeting which all are welcome to attend this Monday 17 October at 6:30pm at the Mercure Hotel, 226 Victoria Street, Potts Point.
I thank the Government, particularly Minister Don Page for supporting my Bill and I congratulate the community for your outstanding campaign to get action on the problems on Victoria Street.
