Return to Redfern Launch

Hello everyone. I'd like to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of our land and pay my respects to the elders, both past and present, and I acknowledge the Premier.

It's great to be here today to launch a new brand to promote Redfern in beautiful Redfern Park on this fabulous oval - home of the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

It's particularly special for me as I started my political life as a Redfern ward alderman wanting to improvements in the area particularly in our parks and for our children, and it's given me the greatest pleasure as Lord Mayor to lead a Council that has completed $50 million worth of projects in this area.

These projects include:

The $16 million upgrade of Redfern and Regent Streets, including The "Bower", a major public art installation;

The $32 million upgrading of Redfern Park and Oval, including children's play areas and a new learner Skate facility;

A number of small pocket parks and playgrounds - Yellowmundee and Pemulwuy parks, Douglass Street Park, Jack Shuttleworth Reserve and Hugo Street reserve;

We are continuing our program of street tree planting and public domain lighting improvements; and

Following the construction of the Skate Facility at Waterloo Oval in 2006, later this year we will open a brand new state-of-the-art Youth Facility in Redfern, which the City has contributed $3.7 million to.

As well we have bought 107 Redfern Street for $3.25 million to provide a future new community centre and while we do the planning and consultation its available to community and cultural groups such as Mardi Gras, which currently has its parade workshop there.

And now, the City is a proud partner in the creation of the Redfern brand with our new Redfern banners flying proudly in Redfern Street.

I look forward to seeing this new brand proudly on the South Sydney Rabbitohs jerseys.

Thank you. Have a great match!
