The Redfern Waterloo Authority (RWA) has been dissolved with powers transferred to the Sydney Metropolitan Development Authority (SMDA) under the Redfern-Waterloo Authority Repeal Bill.
I opposed creation of the RWA in 2004 because it gave the Planning Minister unfettered power to approve development with normal accountability and checks and balances removed.
The City will now assess development proposals under $10 million, which will cover most DAs, and development over this threshold will be determined by the Planning Minister. The Minister will decide which body will rezone land following a report by the SMDA.
I oppose excising parts of the inner city to unelected bodies like the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and RWA. I told Parliament that Council should be responsible for all development and rezoning so that the inner city is assessed holistically and with community consultation.
