Remember when Sydney had no small bars, just huge characterless beer barns?
With hundreds of small bars across the city now, I'm so proud to have played a part in the groundswell community campaign by pushing the legislation through the NSW Parliament as an Independent MP.
Now it's time to make sure those small bars are sustainable and help them put on more live music and performance, which is why we've made a series of recommendations to the NSW Government's review to help this sector grow.
Two key steps we're recommending that would make a real difference: changing the definition of the Small Bar license category to increase the capacity limit from 60 to 120 patrons; and allowing trading hours to 2am.
So many of us live in the city or visit because of the rich night time culture and all of us want it to be safe with interesting options for people of all ages to go out and enjoy themselves after dark - our research shows small bars can play an important role in that mix.
