This week I was very pleased to hold the first of our regular forums for tenants of social housing at Nothcott, Surry Hills.
I hold these meetings across the City so that tenants can hear from local service providers about work in their area and discuss their concerns directly with decision makers.
Last December, we hosted a very successful forum on our new Safe City Strategy with community members, health workers, police and support services to look at ways we can improve the well-being of people living in social housing.
As part of this work the City is developing a Social Housing Well-being and Safety Action Plan to guide our work with tenants until 2017. The plan will be placed on public exhibition in June before it goes to Council for endorsement. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the surveys conducted so far.
Tenants have raised concerns about the use of Ward Park as a work site during light rail construction work.
Transport for NSW are using a number of open spaces along the proposed route for the duration of the project on the basis that it will enable construction to occur as quickly as possible.
At Ward Park, the majority of the open space on the north east corner is proposed as the construction compound, however, the paths, playground and gardens at the western edge may remain accessible.
Once the project is complete, Ward Park will be fully revitalised in consultation with the local community.
The City will continue to advocate for local residents to ensure impacts of construction are minimised.
The State Government is holding an inquiry into the demand for social, public and affordable housing in New South Wales.
I encourage everyone who cares about the quality and availability of affordable housing in NSW to make submissions before Friday 28 February.
