Sydney is at its beautiful and balmy best for Festival First Night. It's fantastic to see people taking over the city streets and enjoying our public spaces as a start to a wonderful three weeks of Sydney Festival.
Through our long term Sustainable Sydney 2030 program, the City is looking for ways to make the city centre more interesting and engaging for residents and visitors.
Festival First Night is the kind of night life we want to encourage: people walking the streets and lanes and enjoying performances, the Art Gallery of NSW open late, and fabulous performances in the Domain.
Next year's First Night, on 7 January, will feature Australian singer-songwriters Washington and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, and the reportedly spectacular Manu Chao in his first Australian performance.
Also on the line-up are Holly Throsby and Casper Babypants (for children), as well as DJ Norman Jay, aerial performance As The World Tipped, The Jolly Boys and Trocadero Dance Palace.
