More and more families are choosing to make their home in the inner city – it’s a real endorsement of the work we’ve been doing to make the city liveable.
But that brings new challenges, like giving parents access to childcare and early childhood education. Childcare places are crucial for parents going back to work and high quality early education is crucial to giving their children the best start in life.
That’s why we’re getting on with the job of providing new childcare centres – with three new centres opening in the second half of this year, providing 220 much-needed places in Alexandria, Darlinghurst and Annandale.
There are currently 5,469 childcare places operating in our local government area, including 967 created by the City since 2013. Up to 2,251 additional places have been approved and are being built, or are currently under assessment by our planners. We are also encouraging the private sector to include new childcare centres in their larger developments.
All children should have the best possible start in life. Childcare isn’t just about helping parents get back to work but also about giving kids the opportunity to prepare for school and beyond.
