The City's Homelessness Unit needs volunteers to help canvas streets, parks and public places to count the number of rough sleepers in the inner city.
The City of Sydney does more than any other Council in Australia to help people experiencing homelessness. We rely on the data collected by volunteers to monitor inner-city homelessness and track progress in getting people off the streets.
Counts have been conducted every six months since 2008, one in winter and one in summer. February's count identified 761 people needing a home - 451 in hostels beds and 310 sleeping rough.
The local data from these counts is vital to getting support from the State and Federal governments so that we can take action on homelessness.
The 2012 winter count takes place early on Tuesday morning 21 August starting at midnight and finishing around 3am. Volunteers will have a training session and guidance so you know what to do on the.
If you can volunteer your time you need to register your interest so City staff can coordinate the evening.
