(6pm 22 March 2012, Ultimo Community Centre)
Hello, everyone. Welcome. I would like firstly to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of our land, and to pay my respects to their Elders. I also acknowledge the 200 nationalities that make up our City.
In 2004 and 2005, we consulted with local communities across the City to develop Local Action Plans. We asked you what you like about your area, about its special characteristics, and what you thought it needed.
We responded by developing plans that respected the character of our neighbourhoods, while addressing their problems. Most of the Local Action Plan projects are now complete or underway, including new facilities, parks and street improvements—and Duncan Mitchell will shortly give us an update on that work.
We again consulted in 2007 to develop our Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan—the long-term vision for our City.
It was the most comprehensive consultation ever undertaken and it was complemented by in-depth research and expert advice.
Our villages and neighbourhoods are at the heart of Sustainable Sydney 2030— and we again invite you to work with us to develop sustainable village projects.
The City has identified 10 village groups across our local government area, each of which shares a local main street or town centre. This grouping will help us manage how we consult, provide services and fairly allocate funding.
Over coming weeks, we will hold workshops for each village group—asking how you see your neighbourhood in 2030 and how we can work with you to protect and improve our villages over coming decades.
Since we've started these consultations, residents in your area have highlighted concerns about noise and pollution in Harris Street. There is interest in greening apartments through programs such as rooftop gardens and locals want better connection from Pirrama Park to the fish markets. You've also asked for programs to support local businesses and services such as a local butcher's shop.
The City will use your comments from this workshop, along with other local input, to draft a plan for your village group, for Council's consideration and funding in future budgets.
I would also like to let you know that the City is hosting a community workshop at 12pm on 31 March to discuss traffic and parking in Alexandria.
Thank you for your interest in coming to this meeting and I look forward to your input.
