Sydney's annual celebration of art in public places kicks off on Friday 20 September, with a huge range of temporary installations and live performances.
For 12 years, Art & About's emphasis has been on taking art out of the galleries and museums and into our streets and public spaces.
Join me in Martin Place next Friday evening to kick off the festival in style. Ben Walsh and The Orkestra of the Underground will perform the visual masterpiece 'The Arrival' by Shaun Tan. We'll have DJs, food trucks, a pop-up bar and Australia's most innovative surf rock band The Break.
This year's free, outdoor artworks include:
- Snailovation by international collective Cracking Art Group - 24 giant, brightly coloured snails will move to a new home each day, surprising people as they walk our streets and parks. Cracking Art's giant snails are made entirely from recyclable materials - a reminder of the importance of environmental awareness and action.
- Field by Out of the Dark - Using 324 mirror faces, Field will shape and refract your vision, constantly shifting and changing what you can see. Located in Hyde Park, Field will show off the changing nature of the trees, the grass and the sky during the day and the people and lights of the city at night.
- Light Installation - leading contemporary Australian artist Matthew Johnson will encircle the iconic tower and Pier Luigi Nervi columns of the MLC Centre on Martin Place and King Street with high large-scale installation - turning it into an ever changing artwork.
You'll also be able to see Art & About favourites like the Sydney Life photography competition in Hyde Park, and our banner gallery throughout the city that will feature the 'walking men' photos of artist Maya Barkai.
Earlier this year, Sydney residents, workers and visitors had their say on how we could encourage culture and creativity in Sydney.
The ideas ranged from encouraging more live music on the streets with pop-up gigs for up-and-coming musicians, to opening affordable spaces for artists to create and present their work.
Art & About is just one of the ways we're making Sydney a creative and inviting place, day and night. It is a celebration of our city's creativity and I hope you can take the time to enjoy it.
