Celebrating Words and Stories

Sydney Writers Festival, the world's third largest writers' festival, begins Saturday 14 May with workshops and authors' talks, followed by an official launch on Tuesday 17 May.

The Sydney Story Factory opens later in the year in Redfern, but will be launched at the Festival. Supported by a grant from my Lord Mayor's Trust, the Sydney Story Factory aims to promote literacy among children by encouraging a love of words and stories. Cunningly disguised as a fantasy shop, the centre will offer one-on-one tutoring and workshops for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly from Aboriginal backgrounds and where English is not the first language. The Trust grant is supporting a demonstration of the project at the Writers' Festival.

The Festival continues until Sunday 22 May, with events spread throughout the City at venues including Sydney Town Hall, City Recital Hall and the City's libraries. Most events focus on the Walsh Bay precinct, bringing this integral part of our city to life.

The City supports the Sydney Writers' Festival with $280,000 in cash sponsorship and additional in kind support.
