There is a significant need for additional early childhood education and care in East Sydney, particularly for children under two. In response, Council last year bought the four-storey former warehouse at 277 Bourke Street as we saw its potential as a much needed not-for-profit childcare centre, with space for commercial uses on the upper levels.
The City will shortly engage design consultants to develop initial concept plans. The consultants' brief will cover concerns residents expressed earlier this year about a possible closure of a part of Berwick Lane. At its meeting on 22 August, Council deferred consideration of that proposal, and no decision has been made.
When concept plans are complete, we will present them at a community meeting for further comment. We will use feedback to develop a draft design that balances the need for an essential community facility with local amenity.
We hope to present a design developed in consultation with the community to the Environment and Heritage Committee and then Council next year.
If Council endorses the proposal, the City will then submit a development application for the works, which provides another opportunity for community comment.
The consultants' brief and other information on the project will soon be available on the City's website www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.
