We live in a great city and have so much to be positive about.
This week, Sydney was ranked fifth in a new liveability ranking of world citie
s by the Economist - scoring well on green space, natural assets, pollution, connectivity, stability, culture and environment and infrastructure.
Last Friday, I talked about Sydney to some of our brightest young creative entrepreneurs at Vibewire's fastBREAK morning at the Powerhouse Museum (see picture).
The City's boosted spending to nearly $370 million this year on the vital services that keep Sydney running around the clock - from garbage collection and libraries to fixing footpaths and enforcing food standards.
Our Financial Plan and Budget for 2012 -13 shows substantial increases in operational spending across the board, from maintaining critical assets, such as roads and stormwater drains, to world leading events including Sydney New Year's Eve.
Much of this work goes unnoticed, but, as the community expects, the City does it every day.
I'm proud we've achieved all this with a balanced budget and no debt. We are also allocating money to finance a billion dollars worth of future infrastructure projects including the transformation of George Street, the development of a low carbon energy network, Australia's largest urban renewal project - Green Square - and six new child care centres.
These projects will change the face of our city, but there is a risk they won't go ahead if the major political parties get control of the city.
On September 8, our community will vote for a new Council. I'm campaigning to keep Sydney Independent so we can continue our important work to improve parks and open space, to make it easier and more pleasant to move around in the city, to reduce our impact on the environment and to help our arts and cultural industries thrive.
The Clover Moore Independent Team is holding a fundraising dinner at The Eight Modern Chinese Restaurant in Haymarket on Friday 20 July. As an Independent Team we don't have the war chests that the big parties pull out for elections, instead we rely on community donations.
Your support is vital.
I hope you have a great long weekend!
