Sydney City is one of the fastest growing areas in terms of jobs and residents. And the City of Sydney has played a large part in that. For the last ten years, we've made the area one of the most desirable places in Australia to live and work.
We've upgraded and introduced new public parks and open space, encouraged design excellence - not just from our own public buildings but by working closely with private developers. We've planted thousands of trees, upgraded main streets, introduced new transport options and childcare, restored heritage buildings and built new swimming pools. And yes, we've encouraged small bars, which people love!
The statistics back our work - five years ago, less than 50 per cent of our residents lived and worked in our local government area, that figure has now increased to 65 per cent. And we've seen some of the biggest jobs growth in our area take place in our villages - Pyrmont and Ultimo grew by 46 per cent while Surry Hills and Redfern grew by 20 per cent.
Sydney City is internationally recognised as one of the world's best cities - it's indisputable and we should all be proud of it.
