The heritage listed Gardener's Lodge in Victoria Park near the corner of City Road and Parramatta Road in Chippendale is to be refurbished and restored for use as a café.
Built in the 1880s in the Gothic revival style, the Lodge has been vacant for ten years.
The restoration will embrace the past and capture the future. Work to restore the external stone and reinstate traditional doors and windows will start in the new year and the interior will be fitted out with a commercial kitchen and toilet facilities.
Sustainability features including a rainwater tank and solar hot water system. When completed, the café will be able to seat up to 75 people indoors and outdoors. Archaeological investigations will be undertaken as part of the works.
With outdoor seating under a large tree and outdoor lighting, the café will bring the park to life and be an attractive place to dine after dark.
