We need government leadership to respond to the challenges of growth and climate change. Decades of short-term decisions have left a backlog of vital infrastructure needed for Sydney's effective functioning, particularly in transport.
After years calling for a long-term infrastructure plan for New South Wales supported by law and coordinated by one governing body, I welcome Infrastructure NSW, which will plan, coordinate and ensure delivery of essential infrastructure.
Past budgets have favoured road expansions and during debate on the Infrastructure NSW Bill I called on Infrastructure NSW to prioritise heavy rail, mass transit, and cycling in its 20-year State Infrastructure Strategy and five-year infrastructure plans.
Inner city light rail is an immediate priority to move workers, shoppers and visitors around the city centre. I also called for light rail links to the sporting stadia and Green Square, and sustainable water and energy projects.
