It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Tonight marks the beginning of the City of Sydney's Christmas celebrations with our traditional family concerts in Martin Place and Hyde Park.

Our decorations and banners are already on display in the city centre and along our village high streets.

From 6pm tonight Martin Place will be taken over by Hi-5, Kate Ceberano, Don Spencer, Justine Clarke, a costume show from Looney Tunes and carols from the Sydney Children's Choir with MC Leah Purcell and thousands of excited children and their families.

I'll be arriving with Santa to light the Martin Place Christmas Tree - which for the first time will display messages sent in via SMS. And we'll celebrate the end of the night with a fireworks display.

For younger children there's also Christmas on the Green in Hyde Park featuring dirtgirl and Bananas in Pyjamas, a performance set by Sam Moran and his Bam Bam Binos Band, plus carols and singing from Darren Percival and the Australian Girls Choir.

Over the next two weekends the City is also hosting four village Christmas concerts. Join me at:

• Reg Bartley Oval, Waratah Street, Rushcutters Bay - Saturday 30 November

• Turruwul Park, Rothschild Avenue, Rosebery - Sunday 1 December

• Alexandria Park Oval, Power Avenue, Alexandria - Saturday 7 December

• Prince Alfred Park, Surry Hills - Sunday 8 December

At each concert there'll be free entertainment, a visit from Santa, craft activities, a barbecue and gelato. You can also buy a $2 Santa stocking for the kids - with all proceeds going to charity partner, Australian Children's Music Foundation.

If you'd like a Christmas celebration on a grander scale then our Sydney Town Hall might be for you. Our grand organ and the stunning surrounding make this a very traditional affair of carol singing, festive music and readings. Tickets sell out quickly, so book yours now through the City Recital Hall box office - or 8256 2222.
