Life's a beach in Green Square

This morning I was delighted to announce the winner of our design competition for a new aquatic centre and park at Green Square.

The winner is Andrew Burges Architects in a team with Grimshaw Architects and landscapers TCL.

Their design beat 143 other entries, including more than 30 from overseas, in a unanimous decision by our jury of expert architects.

The aquatic centre and Gunyama Park will be help transform Green Square and provide a great place for all members of the community to exercise, relax, and to catch up with friends and family.

The aquatic centre and park will be the biggest built in Sydney since the Olympics. The area of its pools will be 40 per cent bigger than those in the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre and more than twice the size of those at Prince Alfred Park Pool.

But it's not just the size that makes this special, it's the great design Andrew Burges and his team have come up.

The new facility also has a gym, a hydrotherapy pool, a full-size outdoor synthetic multipurpose sports playfield, a long covered outdoor deck that will be perfect for activities like yoga, a café and crèche and great pools for all types of swimmers.

The Green Square site is prone to major flooding and the aquatic centre and many other projects in this area can't be built until that issue is resolved. The City and Sydney Water have reached an agreement to jointly fund major drainage works which should be completed by early 2017.

Green Square village area is one of the fastest growing parts of the State and is expected to eventually house around 54,000 people and provide jobs for more than 41,000 people.

We are providing the best facilities we can to help make one of Sydney's fastest growing areas an even better place to live and raise a family.
