Making Sydney a Christmas destination

Council agreed at our final meeting for the year to my proposal that the City engage a Creative Director for Christmas. This role will build on our existing Christmas projects and work with businesses, retailers, cultural and community organisations to develop a unified Christmas program for Sydney.

The City's New Year's Eve celebrations already demonstrate how a well organised, imaginative event can bring families and friends together, attract international attention and provide immeasurable social, cultural and economic benefits.

Council requested the CEO to bring a report to Council on this proposal in early 2012.

It will build on our existing Christmas program which includes our traditional Christmas tree lighting and concert in Martin Place, Christmas on the Green in Hyde Park and four village concerts. We are holding Christmas events and activities in our libraries, community centres, youth centres and children's centres and supporting several community Christmas events.

We are also delivering Christmas Hampers to approximately 190 Meals on Wheels clients and conducting Christmas lights tours to the Mt Annan area for older residents, the Indonesian and Spanish speaking communities.

We decorate the City and our village streets with trees, decorations and banners and we light the Town Hall with spectacular displays. Our decorations and activities complement everything else that is part of a Sydney Christmas: the magical Christmas displays in David Jones windows - this year celebrating popular Christmas carols, the Carols in the Domain concert, choral events at the Opera House and the Town Hall and Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority's Darling Harbour Santa Festival.

Our Christmas website provides information about events and activities, shopping and dining, Christmas decorations, Council centre opening hours, safety tips, tips for a green and sustainable Christmas and displays some of the entries in our Christmas colouring in competition.
