Parliament rehashes the golden oldies

Government support allowed Fred Nile's Constitution Amendment (Restoration of Oaths of Allegiance) Bill to pass. Members of Parliament now have the option to pledge loyalty to the Queen of England instead of their constituents. The option was appropriately removed in 2006 and I opposed this retrograde bill.

Pledging allegiance to the Queen is out of touch with 21st Century Australia. Parliament should reflect contemporary views and the makeup of contemporary society - in the City of Sydney local government area there are people from 200 different nationalities and their diversity and culture help make Sydney the remarkable city it has become.

If politicians are pledging allegiance to an absent monarch who has little involvement in the affairs of this State, most will see Parliament as irrelevant.

Our Parliament needs to concentrate on the important challenges that face the state like transport, climate change and affordable housing.
