(6.45pm, Tuesday 30 April 2013, Bistro 80, The Star)
Thank you, Mike [O'Malley, MC]. Hello, everyone. I would like firstly to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of our land, and to pay my respects to their Elders. I also acknowledge the people of 200 nations who live in our City.
I acknowledge Frederic Luvisutto, Managing Director of The Star and our host for today; Lawrence Gibbons and other members of the Pyrmont Chamber of Commerce and our friends from Mudgee. Welcome back to Pyrmont!
This is the third year the Pyrmont Festival has collaborated with the wonderful food and wine producers of Mudgee to promote that region, and also to promote this area's growing reputation as a tourist and dining precinct.
We want all our City villages to maintain and develop their own character and identity, to offer something unique that locals can be proud of and visitors can enjoy. It's what helps make a city memorable.
So we are glad to collaborate with and support this festival. In addition to our fairly significant financial support, we've also had our Business Precinct staff working closely with the Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber to develop the event.
With its emphasis on regional produce, the Festival supports the City's sustainability goals, encouraging people to think about their food, to support small producers and to eat and drink regionally. There will also be a City cycling stall in Pirrama Park during the two-day event there, and of course, free bike parking.
It's also great to see - for the first time this year - the involvement of such vital Ultimo-Pyrmont cultural institutions as the National Maritime Museum, the Powerhouse and the Sydney Heritage Fleet, all distinctive Sydney institutions.
So much of the Festival is taking place in our beautiful, award-winning Pirrama Park, including a sculpture exhibition from Mudgee artists, as well as the art from the children of six local schools.
It will be a fabulous event, something for everyone to look forward to. And I look forward to seeing you all there.
Congratulations to everyone who's worked so hard to make it happen.
