(6pm, 11 December 2011, Waratah Park Rushcutters Bay)
Thank you, Rhys Muldoon, MC and hello, everyone, welcome to the Rushcutters Bay Village Christmas Concert and to the official reopening of Rushcutters Bay Park.
I'd like firstly to acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, traditional custodians of this land, and to acknowledge the 200 nationalities that make up this great city of ours.
Welcome to our Christmas celebration which is for all our communities whatever your religious or cultural background.
Tonight we have fabulous music from Don Spencer, Justine Clarke, Swing Patrol, and the Velvet Set - not to mention a visit from Santa Claus, a barbeque, fireworks and you can pedal special Christmas bikes which generate energy to work.
Tonight we'll also officially re-open the Park after our $9.5M ugrade.
Work has included:
- renovation and restoration of the historic grandstand
- improved landscaping, paths and steps down to the water
- installation of a system to filter storm water before it gets into the Harbour
- a new Kiosk, new facilities & amenities and renewed tennis courts.
I'd like to thank our design consultants, Lacoste + Stevenson and JMD Design; and our construction company, CBG Commercial Building Group.
Staff who worked on the project, including design managers Marcia Morley, Kathleen Ng, Michael Harvey and Chris Thomas; and project managers Gynt Drynan and Terry Byrnes.
This year, we have a new Christmas Charity Partner - the Australian Children's Music Foundation. This is a not-for-profit organisation which uses the power of music to inspire and enrich the lives of young Australians who are disadvantaged or have been traumatised.
I'd like to thank our sponsors who make these events possible:
- our Major Sponsor, American Express
- our Media Partner, 2UE Sydney and
- our Supporting Sponsors, Coles, Lindt Master Chocolatiers and Sofitel.
Thank you all for coming this evening and thanks to our wonderful performers and our City of Sydney staff.
Happy Christmas, everyone!
