Together with the Sydney community, I want to express shock and horror at the tragic events that occurred this morning at Martin Place.
I want to express my sorrow to the families who have lost loved ones and empathy for the hostages who have had such a terrifying ordeal and appreciation for the bravery of our police.
But this tragic incident doesn't change who we are - a welcoming, inclusive, harmonious and multicultural community.
This was a one-off, isolated incident involving someone with a violent background and we need to unite as we deal with the aftermath of this tragic event and not let this change who we are - proud of our diversity.
I encourage everyone to return to the city.
